At the beginning of 2012, 55-year-old Paul Michaelsen was just entering his fifteenth year at Pfizer Inc. He was a senior-level project manager and anticipated that his work at Pfizer would be the final stop in his career. But by the end of year everything changed. Michaelsen was laid off and so, much too young to retire, he embarked on yet another leg of his career.
Michaelsen decided to take the 10-week iOS Application Development Course at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. While enrolled in that course, he attended an open house that introduced him to upSKILL. He applied for the grant and was accepted. Once certified in cloud computing, he was hired for a six-month consulting position as a systems analyst with MedImmune, a biotechnology company located in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He credits the combination of his years of experience and the Cloud Computing Certification for getting him hired.
There will be more about Michaelsen, including his insights on the cloud industry and his advice for other unemployed IT workers in the first issue of the upSKILL newsletter, due out this October.
